AFTRS WORKSHOP

On Wednesday the 18th May we went to The Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

We attended a workshop called Storytelling with a Camera which was run by Cinematographer, Gareth Tillson and ran from 10am - 1pm.

To get to AFTRS we all made our way to Circular Quay through buses, trains or ferries and then caught a bus together.

We started with a session of theory learning about the following things:
  • Aiming and Framing
  • Panning and tilting
  • The rule of thirds

  • Shots

After that we got into groups and were given a video camera per group and filmed examples of each of the types of shots we learnt in the theory session. After we finished that we viewed our examples back in the studio on a TV screen.
Next we had a short break to eat and then back to the workshop.
Gareth then explained our next task, to get back into our groups and film 5-10 shots to accompany a script each group was given (each group was given a different script). My group planned our shots through a storyboard and then went out and shot them. Once everyone was finished we watched each short film on the TV together whilst Gareth Critiqued them and gave us points on how to improve them.
It was then time to say thank you and goodbye to Gareth as it was time for our guided tour of AFTRS.

The tour would usually go for 45 minutes but we only had time for a 25 minute tour so it was quite rushed, but at the same time, very interesting. First off We visited Studio 2, where there had just recently been a collaboration between AFTRS and NIDA and some of the set was still set up.
Next we made our way through where all the sets and props are made by 6 professional constructors and walked up stairs to where all the props, big and small, are stored. In this storage room they have a massive industrial lift that moves big props from the upstairs storage to downstairs, where the studios are.
After that we walked through the Radio section, with three separate radio studios. We then moved to the auditorium where they have pre- screenings for films and "Friday on My Mind" a free session every friday night, each week they have a new topic and someone will come in and talk to the guests about it.
Lastly, we finished off the tour, receiving bags with lots of information about AFTRS inside.
